You don’t have to look too far or for too long to come across a story about the “opioid epidemic” that’s sweeping our country. Too many people are dying too young from it. Experts say that opioid overdoses are now the number one killer for people under the age of 50.
A local woman who lost her son to an overdose has created the Peoria Recovery Project, which is hosting a free, community-wide, one-day heroin/opioid awareness event this Saturday (4/21) at the Peoria Civic Center, Hall D. It runs from 9 am ’til 4 pm, with speakers from the treatment and recovery world beginning at 11 am. A & E’s “Dope Man,” Tim Ryan is the featured speaker.
HERE’s the link to their Facebook page.
There’ll have over 50 educational and resource booths to visit. And this isn’t just about opioid abuse, it’s for anyone suffering from substance abuse disorder, any type of addiction… and their families who get swept up in it, too. Many area news makers will attend, including: Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, Peoria police chief Marion, Peoria fire chief Olehy, Peoria Country State’s Attorney Jerry Brady, Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood and others.
It’s a great opportunity to learn more about it and what can be done to fight back against addiction. Join us for the Peoria Recovery Project’s event Saturday at the Civic Center, with Peoria’s Classic Rock Station, 95.5, GLO.
