D.A. Points in now 40 years old, closer to the end of his professional golfing career than to the beginning. Yesterday, D.A. showed he still has game by winning the Puerto Rico Open by two shots.
It was D.A.’s third PGA title and first since he won the Houston Open one week shy of four years ago. Most everyone remembers his first championship, golfing with Bill Murray at the Pebble Beach Pro Am.
The three-time Illinois state amateur champion and former All American, University of Illinois golf star started his final round with five straight birdies. He would then bogey a few holes before regrouping. In all on Sunday, he parred just six holes.
D.A. earns tour exemption for the next two years and that’s important since he lost his PGA card a year ago. His world ranking had fallen to 600+. So while the top 64 were golfing in Houston this past week in a World Golf Championship event, D.A. took advantage. Don’t dismiss the softer field, though, pro golf is really deep these days. Heck, the runner up in Puerto Rico (T2) was Retief Goosen, a two-time U.S. Open winner.
He won’t get to golf at The Masters next month, but will gain entry to many of the big tour events. He also claims the winner’s share, over a half million dollars for the win. Way to go, D.A.!
