Sad news tonight, 95-5, G-L-O Classic Rock fans. Bob Weir, founding member of the Grateful Dead has died at the age of 78. Weir passed away from “underlying lung issues”, after he successfully beat cancer in this past Summer. A statement released from his official web site said the following: “He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could.”
Bob Weir was a driving force behind the Grateful Dead for six decades. He was dedicated to the road, as was the band. The “Dead” performed roughly 2,300 live shows and their live performances were much celebrated by their legions of fans for decades. His rhythm guitar playing and vocals were instrumental with his partnership with Jerry Garcia. Garcia passed away in 1995. Weir and Garcia along with their band mates were essential in the creation of what would be labeled the “jam band” music genre. Sad day, indeed.
