George Martin, the longtime, legendary music producer for The Beatles, has passed away. He died Tuesday at the age of 90.
Martin was a Grammy-winning producer, arranger and musician who was often called the “Fifth Beatle.” A World War II veteran of the British Royal Navy, Martin became a music producer for the BBC’s classical music department. That love of classical strings permeated some of The Beatles’ greatest songs, like “Yesterday,” “I Am the Walrus,” “Eleanor Rigby” and Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” Click HERE for Rolling Stone.com’s 10 great Martin-influenced moments.
In 1962, Martin had a meeting with Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Epstein played a recording of The Beatles music, but Martin wasn’t wowed. Martin did, however, like McCartney and John Lennon’s voices and decided to sign the band. Martin would go on to produced all The Beatles music through 1969’s “Abbey Road” album.
McCartney wrote a beautiful tribute to Martin, calling him “a truly great man” and “a second father to me.”
Godspeed to Heaven’s next all star producer, George Martin.
