Peoria County Animal Protection Services reminds pet owners that local ordinances require all dogs and cats over four months old be vaccinated against rabies and registered in Peoria County. Caring pet owners keep their pet's rabies vaccinations current to protect their pet, family, and themselves. Even in urban areas, dogs can encounter a rabid skunk, and many cats and dogs that "never go outside" have encountered a bat inside the house. Pets in rural areas are particularly susceptible.
Peoria County pet owners should contact their veterinarian to schedule an appointment if their pet's rabies vaccinations are not current. Owners should also register their pet's vaccination by purchasing a rabies tag at the veterinarian's office or at PCAPS, 2600 NE Perry, Peoria. Dogs and cats without current rabies inoculations and tags may be impounded and their owners cited; fines begin at $100 per animal.
