The St. Louis Cardinals promoted 34-year-old Rob Cerfolio to general manager on Friday.
Cerfolio joined the Cardinals in 2024 as an assistant GM and will continue to work under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom.
He replaces longtime Cardinals executive Randy Flores, who became the new GM of the Houston Astros last week.
“Since joining the Cardinals two years ago, Cerf has spearheaded tremendous progress in our player development efforts from top to bottom, and in the advancement of our performance group and its integration within our entire organization,” Bloom said in a news release. “He is relentless in his desire to move us forward, and is invested in relationships with both new hires and longtime staff alike. I’m excited to partner with him in his new role as we work to set the standard for the industry in every area of baseball operations.”
Cerfolio previously worked in the Cleveland Guardians’ front office from 2015-24, finishing his tenure there as the director of player development.
A right-handed pitcher at Yale, Cerfolio was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 34th round in 2013 but did not sign. He graduated from the Ivy League school in 2014.
The Cardinals finished 77-85 and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season in 2026. St. Louis has not won a playoff series since 2019.
