Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 26 shots to earn his 10th consecutive victory as the Carolina Hurricanes earned a 7-0 romp over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
Sean Walker scored twice and Juuso Valimaki, Sebastian Aho, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored as the Hurricanes rolled to their fourth consecutive win. Seth Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers, Shayne Gostisbehere and Stankoven each posted two assists.
Kochetkov matched the second-longest winning streak to begin a season in NHL history, tying Carey Price’s string 10 years ago for Montreal.
Kochetkov recorded his second shutout this season and 13th of his career. He has played in all but six of the Canes’ games this season. He owns a 1.49 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage in his 10 appearances.
The Jets dropped their ninth game in a row, going 0-7-2 during the stretch.
Winnipeg goalie Stuart Skinner was pulled after the fifth goal, departing with 12 saves at the 9:09 mark of the second period. Clay Stevenson collected 13 saves after entering the game.
Walker opened the scoring with a short-handed goal. His second goal gave him his first multi-goal outing in two seasons with Carolina.
Stankoven’s team-leading 10th goal of the season came before the midway mark of the second period as the Hurricanes built their lead to 5-0. The Jets managed only five shots on goal to that point.
Winnipeg made Kochetkov work for the rest of the period, sending nine shots in his direction in the next 10 minutes. Still, Carolina’s four goals during a 7:14 span in the first half of the second period proved more than enough.
Aho has 20 points through the first 16 games, marking the quickest he has reached that mark in his NHL career.
The Hurricanes were coming off an 11-win October, tying the NHL record for most victories in October.
Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin played in his 800th NHL game, all with the Hurricanes.
The Jets were playing the third stop of a four-game road swing that concludes Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens.
