Alex Tuch scored his second goal of the game at 3:42 of overtime Saturday to lift the host Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory over his former team, the Buffalo Sabres.
Tuch, acquired by Washington in a sign-and-trade deal with Buffalo in June, was in the slot to take a pass from Dylan Strome behind the net and beat a screened Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen inside the left post.
Strome also scored twice, and Charlie Lindgren made 18 saves for the Capitals.
Jack Quinn, Josh Doan and Noah Ostlund scored for the Sabres. Luukkonen made 30 saves.
Quinn opened the scoring at 6:27 of the first period, taking a pass from Olen Zellweger along the half wall, moving through the circle to the net and lifting it short side over Lindgren.
Doan made it 2-0 at 10:36. Ryan McLeod intercepted the puck in the corner and quickly fed an uncovered Doan, who fired a snapshot that beat Lindgren blocker side.
Tuch cut Buffalo’s lead to 2-1 at 16:10 of the first period when his centering pass from the right corner deflected off former teammate Tage Thompson’s stick and into the net.
Strome pulled the hosts even early in the second period. Jakob Chychrun’s point shot deflected off Kyrou’s stick on the way to the net, landing in front where Strome collected it and backhanded it past Luukkonen at 2:59.
He then gave the Capitals their first lead of the game at 17:24. With Ostlund on his back, Justin Sourdif maintained possession behind the net before feeding Strome for a quick shot from the doorstep to make it 3-2.
Ostlund tied it 3-3 at 2:20 of the third period. Owen Power fed an open Ostlund at the bottom of the right circle, and Ostlund’s centering feed went off Kyrou’s skate in front.
