High-scoring offenses have become the norm with Tim Thornton and his Peoria High Lions. Last Friday on the Super Nutrition Red Zone Game of the Week, the Lions “O” did it again, setting a Class 6A state playoff record by scoring 78 points in a 78-58 victory over Palos Heights Shepard. The first round game at Peoria Stadium also set a 6A IHSA playoff record for most points scored – combined – in a game with 136!
This Friday, the Red Zone team travels with the 9-1 Lions when they play at 9-1 Oak Lawn Richards, the champion of the same South Suburban Red Conference that Shepard plays in. Richards football is always successful. The Bulldogs have won two state championships and finished runners up twice. Richards knocked off Washington last week, 20-16, at Oak Park. Kickoff this Friday from Richards High School is at 7p, Pregame show featuring my interview w/HFC Tim Thornton and game preview by Tony Johnson is at 6:30p.
Overall, 7 of our 11 high school football playoff teams were eliminated in round one last week. 10-0 IVC advanced in Class 4A and will play at 8-2 Murphysboro Sat. at 3p. 8-2 Eureka whipped a Chicago team in its opener and plays at tradition-rich, 9-1 Wilmington, Sat, 5p. 8-2 Farmington is the only area survivor with a round two home game. The Farmers host 8-2 Paxton/Buckley/Loda Saturday at 5p. Pekin, Washington, Dunlap, Notre Dame, Morton, Tremont and Princeville all fell in the first playoff weekend.
