The third week of the high school football season is here, and this Friday Mid Illini Conference play begins. We’ll start to separate the contenders from the pretenders, and our Illinois National Bank Red Zone Game of the Week presented by OSF Healthcare will feature two teams that would like to break the Washington-Metamora stranglehold atop the conference.

1-1 Dunlap, with most of its skill position players back from a year ago, will visit 1-1 Pekin in our main game of the week. Dunlap won at playoff regular Marion last week in overtime in a game the Eagles never lead until the extra session, while Pekin will look to bounce back after a drubbing from Sterling. So, both teams share an impressive road win and a lopsided home loss thus far in 2016. Join longtime Peoria Pirates head coach Bruce Cowdrey and me for the call from Pekin’s Memorial Stadium.

Our other featured game is a big one in the Prairieland, as 2-0, state-ranked Elmwood-Brimfield plays at the Patriot Bowl, facing Peoria Heights – Quest, which has opened the season 2-0 for the first time in 22 years. Last week, Tom Meredith was at The Heights to call the end of the Patriots’ thrilling 35-28 victory over Princeville, and he’ll be there again for some play by play and all the scoring updates.
