Defending Big 12 champion Peoria High opened the season by scoring 70 points in its week one win at Normal West. And the Lions needed all of those gaudy points in a 70-63 wild road win.

Week two of the high school football season finds Peoria High hosting rival Richwoods in our featured, main game from Peoria Stadium in the Illinois National Bank Red Zone Game of the Week Presented by OSF Healthcare. Last week, Elmwood/Brimfield scored four unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter of our main game against Class 1A top-ranked Stark County to gain an impressive, road blowout win, 47-6. State-ranked DeeMack shutout Route 9 Rival Tremont, 37-0, in our other featured game opening week.

The Lions’ Geno Hess, a junior transfer from Peoria Heights/Quest, stepped in for injured senior running back Jaleen James in Peoria High’s opener and ran historically wild. Hess, behind a huge, dominant, veteran line, rushed 63 times for 567 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns! That’s the second highest single-game rushing total in Illinois state history! (The record is 593 yards in a game.) Hess also caught 4 passes for 53 yards, so in his first game with the Lions, Hess accounted for over 600 yards!

Richwoods, meanwhile, looked like the team that slipped to a losing record and missed the playoffs a year ago. The Knights were blanked at home by Champaign Central, 42-0, in the opening game in Big 12 action. Richwoods’ offense rushed for just 19 yards. The Knights bright spot was their junior transfer quarterback from Notre Dame, Keenan Streitmatter, who passed 10 of 22 times for 96 yards.

Tom Meredith returns to give scoring updates and do some live play by play in a good small school matchup: 1-0 Princeville @ 1-0 Peoria Heights/Quest. Back in the studio, Jason Glick produces and tracks down the scores from all the week 2 area games. Our pregame show Friday starts at 6:30 p.m., featuring my interviews with game of the week head coaches Tim Thornton and Roland Brown. Kickoff’s at 7.
