Sammy Hagar is one of the cooler guys in the rock world, and that’s saying a lot because most of the dudes in rock bands bring the swagger and the cool. But Sammy’s unique, not only in his rock pedigree and success, but in his loquacious, friendly, over-the-top personality. We’re glad to have him on our airwaves every Saturday night from 7 til 9 with his new “Top Rock Countdown” show.
Recently, Sammy and his wife, Kari, returned from a month spent in Cabo and Hawaii (tough life, eh?). Sammy probably gets inundated with fan mail still, and he usually reads, but doesn’t answer it. For some reason, he started reading some of the letters and chanced upon one from Tom Williamson, who asked if he could buy the Red Rocker a drink when they came to San Francisco to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Hagar was touched, since he and his wife are also working on their 25th wedding anniversary. The video below, shot by his wife Kari, shows Sammy calling up Tom and explaining that he couldn’t free up time to meet with them that day, but he did offer them a free meal for their anniversary dinner at his restaurant, El Paseo, in a nearby suburb.
Now, the kicker. During the call, fan Tom mentioned that he and his wife (then girl friend) had seen Hagar’s Van Halen 24 years ago in Virginia. Hagar gets giddy when he realized that during that same day, Sammy had met his future (and current) wife, Kari. At the beginning of the call, Sammy stated that he usually doesn’t respond to fan letters, but that “everything happens for a reason.” Looks like Sammy and his wife got as big a kick out of the call as the fan did.
