Double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius is being held in a South African jail today, accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend, Reeve Steenkamp. Pistorius will be formally charged tomorrow in court in Pretoria, South Africa.
What's not known yet is whether this terrible death was the result of a domestic arguement or whether Pistorius shot her by accident, thinking she was an intruder. South Africa has a high crime rate, and it's common for home owners to have guns for protection. The shooting occured around 4 a.m. local time. While never charged with any crime prior, police had been called to Pistorius' home for "previous (domestic) incidents," police there said.
Pistorius is known in the racing world as "The Blade Runner," because the double amputee - his legs were amputated below the knee when he was very young due to a bone defect - runs with special carbon fiber blades. His success running in Paralympic events lead to his inclusion in last summer's London Olympic Games, where he historically ran against able-bodied runners.
Steenkamp was a model, just 29 years old, who was apparently looking forward to Valentine's Day. She tweeted to "Get excited" for the holiday just the day before.
