According to The Doors official Facebook page, keyboardist and co-founder of the band, Ray Manzarek, has died today in Germany. He had been fighting bile duct cancer for some time. Manzarek and the late Jim Morrison formed the group back in 1965. His distinctive keyboard work defined The Doors sound.
Manzarek was an Illinois boy-done-good. He graduated from St. Rita High School in Chicago and then DePaul University. He met Jim Morrison while both were attending UCLA.
Manzarek’s Doors band mate, guitarist Robby Krieger, says in a statement, "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."
At the time of his death, Manzarek was surrounded by his wife, Dorothy and brothers Rick and James. The FB page asks that, rather than flowers, fans of Manzarek can me a donation in his name to standup2cancer.org
