This afternoon, Facebook and co-founder / chief executive Mark Zuckerberg held its first press conference at its Menlo Park, CA, headquarters since it went public with its IPO. Facebook unveiled a new "Graph Search" tool, hoping to add another revenue stream from search advertising.
Will this new tool piss off Facebook users like seemingly every minute change does? Not likely. It will allow users to search for things shared in the past by its users in four areas: people, photos, places and interests. The search is not refined to Facebook contacts, but will not send you to outside links, either. Graph Search will help you find data on the internet that Facebook owns.
The Wall Street Journal offered this example of the new search tool's use:
Using the new tool a Facebook member could, for example, plug a query into a blue bar at the top of the Facebook site seeking local restaurants liked by their friends, for example, or photos posted by contacts within a specific time frame.
The new Graph Search will start to be rolled out to a limited number of Facebook's billion users next week.
