12.12.12 What's In A Number?
2:46PM Wednesday
December 12, 2012

Some folks are treating today: 12-12-12 on the calendar like it's some sort of holiday.  It's not, of course, but it does have a good ring and, at least in Las Vegas, a lot of folks went there to get married on this most memorable of dates.

So, is the number 12 special?  Does it wield more power than its numerical peers?  I did some research today.  You be the judge.

There are 12 months in a year, 12 hours on a clock, 12 signs of the zodiac and 12 people on a jury to decide a person's fate.  There are 12 donuts in a dozen and 12 ounces in a beer, but also 12-step programs for people who drink too much of it.  Twelve is the highest possible dice roll and there's 12 face cards in a deck.

There are 12 basic hues in the color wheel, 12 inches in a foot, 12 function keys at the top of your computer's keyboard and 12 days of Christmas.  Twelve American men walked on the moon.  It takes 12 strikes for a perfect bowling game.  The human body has 12 cranial nerves, and 12 is the largest one syllable number.

In ancient Greek religion, there were 12 Olympian Gods of the Pantheon.  In the Bible, Jacob has 12 sons who went on to form the 12 tribes of Israel.  In the New Testament, Jesus had 12 Apostes, and on King Arthur's round table there were 12 knights.

Is 12-12-12 a special day?  Doubt it, but that didn't stop me from dropping $12 in the gas tank at Hucks and throwing away another $12 on tonight's Powerball drawing.

Cheers!
